I've wandered around online quite a bit, looking for fics worth reading, authors worth following. I've found the best tool for this to be other people's recommendations; that is, if I like something someone's written (or one thing that person particularly likes), I'm likely to enjoy some of the same things they do.

This being the case, I thought I'd compile a list of fics and authors that I really like so that I can return the favor.

About my taste in fanfics.

Authors and archivists, if I've linked to the wrong portion of your site, if your site's moved or if you'd prefer that I not link to your stories, please e-mail me so that I can make the necessary changes.

If you read and enjoy any of these fics, please take a few seconds to let the author know. Every author I've ever talked to appreciates it.

If your taste doesn't agree with mine (or if you've run through my recs and are looking for more), there are a lot of recs sites and recs journals linked from Recs Rainbow. Other fic recs in various fandoms can be found at the Crack Van and at Try This Fic (for anime specific fandoms with a m/m bias). You can also find recs in some of the entries in The Shipper's Manifesto, Idol Reflection Version 2.0, Relationships and other similar communities. I use all of them, to some extent, to find the fics I rec here.

Note: As of 5 October 2006, I've cross listed crossover recs so that they're listed in the crossovers section and under each of the fandoms involved. That makes some fandoms suddenly look much larger than before and may, at some point, confuse those looking for new recs who're going by the update list from Recs Rainbow. When I post an update list to Recs Rainbow, I'll still count crossovers only as crossovers rather than double, triple or quadruple counting them to show all the fandoms involved.

I did this because the crossovers page had gotten so large that it was hard to find stories in specific fandoms. I know there are some people who adore crossovers and don't care what fandoms they're in, but there are also readers who're willing to read crossovers in some fandoms and not in others. I hope this will be a help for the latter group.

There are still a few recs that can only be found on the crossovers page because they're for websites or particular authors rather than for stories. There may be some glitches in the cross indexing because I'm not double checking it particularly thoroughly (just setting it up took hours). If you see something that needs fixing, please e-mail me.

I'm considering some other tweaks to the site to make it more useful, but implementing them will depend on my having time and probably won't happen quickly. For example-- I'm considering adding notes on ratings and pairings and labeling recs gen/het/slash, but doing those will be time consuming and may not be something I'm able to do for the entire site at once. I may start with the fandoms that have the fewest recs and work up to the monsters. I may also decide not to list ratings for fics not rated by the authors or not to try to give pairing lists for very long fics that I read a long time ago (or just to list the primary pairing, if there is one). I may also skip the gen/het/slash because my definitions of the terms may not match readers'. Feedback on the subject is welcome.

Ah, My Goddess Fics:
Chaotic Future by Cloud-Dreamer
Ranma/Ah, My Goddess/Sailor Moon. Ranma, in girl form, insults Skuld who, in turn, locks him into girl form. After further insults, Skuld almost kills Ranma and receives divine punishment. She's changed into a god and will remain male until until Ranma names Skuld's firstborn child. Apart from Ranma, Kasumi, Shampoo and Cologne, the story shows the Ranma characters in the worst light that canon has to offer. (Added 20 April 2006)

Amber Fics:
Aedan's Reality by Todd Worrell
This is an Amber character diary from a long running campaign. The character voice comes through strongly, but there are also some weaknesses peculiar to the genre-- Characters drift through without purpose, simply because they're either player characters or necessary for other player characters. If you don't mind the disjointed effect that comes from following part of a role playing campaign, this is worth a read. (Note: I haven't finished all of this yet, but I do plan to.) Arranged Marriage by thermidor
As a punishment, Random was forced to marry a blind Rebman lady. How did the marriage look from her side? This was the story written for me for Yuletide 2005. It was just what I was looking for-- An exploration of one of the female characters from canon. Go, read it and tell the author you liked it. (Added 15 January 2006)

Time Upon a Once by Rhi
Two sisters search for their brother. The author does a very nice job conveying the trickiness of Shadow. (Added 8 June 2006)

The Tragical History of Eric, King of Amber by Maya
Eric's rise to the throne and eventual death written in the style of Shakespeare. (Added 6 May 2005)

Andromeda fics:
Ancestor's Breath by Keith Hamilton Cobb
The actor who played Tyr wrote this series of introspective monologues in which Tyr considers his past, Neitzchean culture and his own immediate ancestors. Very articulate and very Tyr. (Added 20 Jan. 2005 - Link bad as of 2 June 2006)

Andromeda: Coda by Robert Hewitt Wolfe
One of the original creators of the series writes his version of where the story could have ended. (Wolfe left the series after the second season, in the fall of 2001, per his biography page.) I find this version rather more satisfying than the direction the series actually took. (Added 15 June 2005) - Link bad as of 4 July 2008.

Calvin, now an adult, remembers his life with and without Hobbes. There's a certain bittersweetness here as he thinks of what growing up has given him and of what it's taken away. I very much liked the ending. (Added 2 March 2006)

This is a very dark NakagoXTamahome story taking place after Tamahome's been dosed with the Kodoku. No happiness for anybody.

Galaxy Quest Fics:
Artificial Devotion by Katie M.
This story offers an explanation of Lt. Tawny Madison's role on The Protector. It has a charming and slightly creepy humor. (Added 1 Jan. 2005)

I loved The Secret Garden when I was a child (I'm still fond of it, actually). It wasn't until much later that I considered the timing of the story and the events that would affect the characters as they grew older. The dynamic between the three children as they grew up would be complicated enough (though I doubt Burnett ever thought of that. Faces by Davner
Zelgadis decides that he needs to stop traveling with Lina and company for a while because he thinks he may have more luck finding his cure alone. Sylphiel suggests a destination, and the two of them travel together, gathering a party of their own. The story starts slowly. I wasn't sure I liked it at first, but once Zelgadis and Sylphiel set out together, I found myself hooked. There are sequels that I haven't read yet. (Added 21 July 2005)

A Flower Whose Name I Don't Yet Know by Silvestris
This series of stories centers on Sylphiel and Copy Rezo after the events of Slayers Next. Sylphiel has an opportunity to nurture a sprout that will become Flagoon reborn, but she also has to deal with a more or less helpless and newly resurrected Copy Rezo. As one might guess, this story gets sweet at points. (Link corrected 2 June 2006)

The Prime Minister writes some Slayers fics that I enjoy. Most of them focus on the Xellos/Lina pairing and contain lemons. They don't feel like the anime, but I enjoy them nevertheless.

Slayers Reflect, Chaos and Rebirth by Stefan Gagne
This trilogy of stories feels like the anime. It's the closest I've seen a fanfic come in texture to the series. The stories are great fun and epic. After reading these, I found myself confusing the stories with canonical events.

I'm not sure how to sum up this Utena fic. It's extremely funny; there's something about Nanami that lends itself to satire. The story's set in the middle of the Black Rose Arc.
