Unless otherwise specified, these recs were added 20 July, 2004.

Harry Potter fics
Accio Stone by krislaughs
This is an AU look at what might have happened if Harry's parents had survived Voldemort's final attack. It's fairly short and doesn't go into a lot of depth. I found some of the things not said more interesting than the things said. (Added 15 June 2005)

Adorn the Sky by madsciencechick
I'm not sure how to sum up this story quickly... It's an AU in which Remus fell through the Veil instead of Sirius. Half of it is Remus' journey on the other side, and half of it is how events in Harry's world progress differently due to the change. Later, it becomes even more complicated. Remus' journey has a lot of mythic elements. (Added 11 July 2006)

Aftermath by Josan
After the war, Severus Snape chooses to live apart from Wizarding society. One day, he runs into another survivor of the war, Ron Weasley, who's still suffering the after effects of catching the fringes of a lethal spell. Snape decides to try to help, but the situation proves even more complicated than he expected. (Added 11 Sept. 2004)

Yu Yu Hakasho/Harry Potter. Genkai accepts a teaching post at Hogwarts, and Koenma sends Yuusuke and company along with her. AU for fifth year. Some Kurama/Hiei shonen ai. There's a WIP sequel here. I haven't started it yet because I expect it will take a long time to finish. (Added 31 July 2006)

The Best Thing I Ever Did by Minisinoo
Amos Diggory remembers his son. (Added 20 April 2006)

Blood Magic by GatewayGirl
I was a bit nervous about this fic when I first ran across it. The premise seemed both unlikely and prone to the worst sort of badfic, but... I had fun with it. I was never remotely convinced that it could fit canon, but I can usually let that slide if the story's internally consistent, and this one is. On Harry's 16th birthday, he and Professor Snape both receive letters delivered via temporal magic from Lily and James Potter revealing Harry's true parentage. (Added 26 Oct. 2004)

The Boys of Summer by Susan Hall

Chaos Is Come Again by theatresm
A couple of entries, including chapters 1 and 3 are out of order on this index. Chapters 1 and 3 can be found (along with chapter 21) listed after chapter 25. Years after the end of the war with Voldemort, Hermione and Professor Snape cooperate in the face of a more mundane but equally all pervasive threat. Neither of the two main characters comes across as completely admirable, and they don't always treat each other well at all. (Added 12 Feb. 2005)

Dark Side of Light by Maya
Harry visits Draco in Azkaban years after the war ends. Their conversations are fascinating and painful. Don't go to this story looking for a happy ending. In fact, expect one that's dark and creepy that will stay with you for a while. (Added 15 August 2005)

The Day Thou Gavest by Kulfold
After the death of Voldemort, Professor Snape works to help Harry lay his ghosts.

Dead Trouble by Marcus L. Rowland
Harry Potter/Buffy. Several years after the death of Voldemort, Harry is asked to escort Dumbledore's niece's body to her funeral. The corpse had been delayed by red tape and then lost for several years, and no one noticed. Because of that, Harry's more than a little surprised when supernaturally strong and athletic young women start chasing him and the coffin across England. (Added 3 Oct. 2007)

Definitions of Romance by Elizabeth Culmer
Harry and Hermione don't make a hugely romantic couple-- By other people's standards. I liked the way this relationship worked, and Harry Potter's never been a fandom in which I worry hugely about canon. (Added 15 January 2006)

This tells what really happened when Dennis Creevey fell in the lake on his way to Hogwarts. I found it rather sweet. (Added 11 July 2006)

Echoes by (Yami) White Rain
The happiest days and the unhappiest days of Minerva's life tell us quite a bit about her. I could believe these. (Added 15 January 2006)

Elijah's Cup by lembas7
Harry Potter/Narnia. After coming home through the wardrobe, the Pevensies were no longer ordinary children. They weren't wizards and witches, but they weren't Muggles either. Many years later, Albus Dumbledore summons them to Hogwarts because he believes they need protection from Voldemort. This takes both series AU. I enjoyed it a lot, but I also... How to put it? Adult Lucy, Edmond and Peter may come across as a little too perfect for some tastes. I think, though, that what it really is is that they act like responsible, involved adults, something the early Harry Potter books conspicuously lack and the addition of which can't help but alter the story considerably. (Added 20 April 2006)

Enlistment by shaye
Farscape/Harry Potter. After defeating Voldemort, Harry and his friends seek a new challenge. This fic is very short, just a brief first meeting. (Added 26 August 2004)

The Fire and the Rose by Abby and Domina
An accident in potions leaves Professor Snape and Hermione in each other's bodies. They have to keep the switch a secret while they seek a method to reverse the process. Parts of this are funny, and parts are painful. All are good. I was not, however, impressed with the sequel. (Added 20 August 2004)

Girl Most Likely by LizBee
Harry is an auror suffering from burnout when a case brings him into contact with Professor Snape's 15 year old daughter. I was very leery of this fic when I first saw it, but it grew on me. I never quite found Lilith likeable, but I'm inclined to think that was because she was well written as opposed to because she wasn't. (Added 23 Dec. 2004)

The Grangers and the War by finisterre
For safety's sake, the Grangers have had to give up every tie to Hermione. (Added 8 June 2006)

The Hollow by lazy neutrino
I was not fully satisfied by the ending of this story, but... I liked it. After Voldemort's gone, there are still problems, but the Wizarding World, generally, isn't prepared to face them. Some of the most unlikely people, however, do what needs to be done. (Added 11 July 2006)

Good Omens/Harry Potter. WIP. This is one of those works in progress that will probably never be finished, but it doesn't matter at all. Lust Over Pendle by A.J. Hall
Neville Longbottom and Draco Malfoy worked together during the war against Voldemort. Now they're trying to build a life together. The author's blurb describes it as "a comedy of manners set in the Golden Age detective thriller genre." There's humor and mystery and adventure. The ending felt a little rushed to me, but I had a lot of fun with the story. There are several other stories in the series, all worth reading. (Added 20 August 2004)

Harry Potter/Vorkosigan. Lord Mark finds himself temporarily in the company of Severus Snape, and they talk. Believe it or not, the story really works! (Also, believe it or not, my husband found this one and recommended it to me. Usually, fan fiction scares him.) There are two sequel stories. (Added 28 April 2004)

MarySue comic by Pirate Monkey

He decides that he can't live as a 15 year old and that he may have a chance to alter the future for the better, so he disguises himself as an adult and applies for the position as Hogwarts' latest Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor. Purists will not like this story because the author takes liberties with the Harry Potter universe and because not everyone will agree about what sort of man Harry might grow up to be.
